Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
Now known as Electrical Equipment Testing, is the inspection and testing of electrical equipment and appliances to ensure they are safe to use.
Every appliance equipped with a plug, and mains extension leads should be visually inspected on a regular basis and be formally tested (subject to usage) to check for electrical faults.
The aim is to to ensure workplace health and safety by preventing electrical accidents in the workplace or other environments where people use portable electrical equipment.
At present there is no specific legal requirement in the UK for portable appliances in either commercial or domestic use to to be tested. Legally employers are required to maintain electrical equipment to ensure it is safe to use. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 mandate that employers take steps to prevent the risk of injury from electricity in the workplace.
It is now very common for insurance companies to require businesses to have their electrical equipment tested by a competent person as a condition of the policy agreement.
What needs to be PAT tested?
Any electrical appliance that has a plug should be PAT tested. This includes stationary equipment, IT equipment, moveable equipment under 18kg, portable equipment, hand-held equipment and fixed equipment.
